Help CYP reach its goal in this years FC Giving Day
“CHASING FREEDOM’ had it’s premier production last night at Housatonic Community Performing Arts Center. It was nothing less than an exceptional show. How many times do you get to go to the theater and learn something, be entertained and be impacted by what you’ve seen. This 45 minute original black history show is the perfect show to go into the schools and educate children about black history and be entertained at the same time. What is even more amazing is the production was written by students and directed by student, Joshua DeGuzman who is 15 years old.
The production included moving performances by Tysonlee Newman as Frederick Douglass, Chanel Sneed as Harriet Tubman, Dyshona Richards as Sojourner Truth, Karie Jackson as Ms. Alice Busybody and Latrell Smith as Harriet’s husband. Outstanding singing numbers by Keith Shaw, Kaylah Rowland and the lovely Archeiline Youte who sang, “Summertime”, as Ella Fitzgerald.
The cast was made up of the company’s 11 youth leaders and 8 other youth participants who auditioned and made it into the show.
Housatonic’s Theater Department provided students to help CYP’s cast with all the production elements giving them the most professional experience and ultimately making the production a much higher quality show.
Joshua DeGuzman making his first directorial debut kept the messages clear of how these past heroes chased freedom and tied into the present that we should not forget nor should we ever stop fighting for freedom no matter who you are.
Once again these youth have shown that given the platform, it’s clear that they are talented, strong, gifted and should be given the stage everyday for all of us to listen.
The team of youth leaders wrote 42 pages in six weeks to create this new show. Creative Youth Productions Inc. (CYP) has copyrighted and reserves all rights.
